SynBERC Undergraduate Research Programs

SynBERC offers summer research opportunities for undergraduates interested in participating in the research of the Center and working on projects in synthetic biology. Our research opportunities are offered in partnership with
research programs at UC Berkeley, UC San Francisco, and MIT. Each program has its own requirements and forms. Applicants should visit the program websites to learn about eligibility requirements, application deadlines, and to download and fill in the required forms.

Summer Undergraduate Program in Engineering Research at UC Berkeley (SUPERB)
The goal of SUPERB is to provide research opportunities in engineering to students who have been historically underrepresented in the field for reasons of social, cultural, educational or economic barriers. The 8-week summer program provides students with the opportunity to gain research experience by participating in research projects with engineering faculty and graduate students. Upon completion of this program students will be better prepared and motivated to attend graduate school. SUPERB features regular workshops and seminars on the nature of academic life, standardized test preparation, writing and research skills and graduate school applications. Informal meetings and social events with faculty and graduate students are also offered. Application deadline:Late January 2008 (check website for exact date).

MIT Summer Research Program (MSRP)
The 10-week MSRP program is primarily designed to encourage students from under-represented minorities, first-generation college students, and students from economically-disadvantaged backgrounds to attend graduate school and pursue a career in research, by providing them the opportunity to do basic research in a top-notch research institution, and in a supportive learning environment with plenty of interaction with graduate students and faculty. This summer program provides a unique opportunity for students who do not have access to top-notch research facilities at their own institution to conduct supervised research in state-of-the-art research facilities. Preference will be given to applicants from non-research intensive colleges and universities. Application deadline:Late January 2008 (check website for exact date).

UC San Francisco Summer Research Training Program
The SRTP program provides summer research opportunities in the health sciences for undergraduate students. Students spend up to 10 weeks working with UCSF faculty members on research projects, attending workshops and seminars, and developing their skills as scientists and scholars. Application deadline:Late January 2008 (check website for exact date).
